Writing When Young: Adolescent Published Authors of Children’s Books
Children’s literature studies have recently witnessed a new interest in young people’s own contribution to literature, whether it be in their input behind the scenes, as authors of fan fiction or as published authors. Certain prejudices exist around such young authors: their work is often seen as derivative and imitative and associated with spontaneous creativity rather than professional work. In this talk, Vanessa Joosen discusses three case studies from Dutch children’s literature to add nuance to the ideas about adolescent published authors.
Based on interviews, archival material and literary analyses, she draws attention to their professionalism and the importance of intra- and intergenerational collaboration in their writing process.
Vanessa Joosen
Vanessa Joosen is professor of English literature and children’s literature at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and author of Adulthood in Children’s Literature. She organizes the Children’s Literature Summer School at the University of Antwerp and is currently the vice-president of IRSCL.
